Legionella training is not a legal requirement. However, the UK safety regulators expect people with responsibility for the management of health and safety in the workplace to be properly trained to a level that allows them to perform their duties safely and effectively.
Those specifically appointed to be responsible for the management of health and safety in the workplace are to be suitably trained. Candidates must receive suitable and sufficient training to a level that allows them to perform their duties safely, effectively and in a competent manner. From the training, the relevant person(s) must be assessed on their competency and receive regular refresher training.
This means that those specifically appointed to implement the control measures, risk assessments and management schemes for the exposure to Legionella bacteria, must be competent. The Health and Safety Executive identifies competence as a combination of training, skills, experience and knowledge, and ability to perform a task safely.
